Welcome to JapSSoc
Yokoso! We here at the Japanese Studies Society (or JapSSoc for short!) would like to thank you for visiting our website.
Another big thank you to all members, new and old, on joining for what will surely be another fantastic year of Japanese language and culture study in UWA.
While many of our members have some Japanese academic background, we certainly encourage anyone who is interested in the language or culture to get involved in our events, even if you don't speak a word of the language as many of the Japanese people attending our functions seek to learn about Australian culture and English. So what are you waiting for? Get moving! Get involved!
The Japanese Studies Society at the University of Western Australia has a charter of fostering the exchange of culture, language, and information among Japanese and local students in Western Australia. Established in 1975, JapSSoc has a history spanning more than 40 years, the society has become a respected and vital medium for academic, social, and professional interaction on campus, and in the community at large. In 2002, the club was part of the founding group of societies collaborating with the Consulate General of Japan in Perth to create the Friends of Japan network combining the information resources of the professional community, Japanese ex-patriot, and Japanese Exchange communities with our own in pursuit of our aforementioned goals.
Here at JapSSoc, we have two aims.
1. To encourage and facilitate Social, Cultural and Educational interest in Japanese studies, the Japanese Language and Culture.
2.To facilitate and promote cultural exchange between native Japanese and students of UWA as well as the Japanese community at large in Perth.
Kaiwa is held on Wednesdays from 4-6pm in the Economics Conference Room at UWA
English-Japanese Conversation Meetup
JapSSoc runs Kaiwa (conversation) sessions every week on Wednesdays between 4pm to 6pm at the UWA Crawley campus during the academic semester. Currently this is at the Economics Conference Room in the Social Sciences building; click the image below for visual directions. This is an event where many UWA students, or in fact, anyone studying or has an interest in Japanese, can meet and interact with many Japanese people within Perth. It’s a great opportunity for anyone who wishes to improve their Japanese or English, as well as make new friends!
If you are interested but am not sure how to get to the venue, please feel free to message us on Facebook or send us an email through firstname.lastname@example.org
